Quick answer: Ethereum is the larger, more decentralized and battle-tested smart contract platform, now running on proof of stake and scaling mostly through cheap layer-2 networks. Solana is a single, high-speed chain with very low fees and a fast-growing app ecosystem, but it has more centralization concerns and a history of outages. Ethereum is generally considered the safer long-term holding. Solana offers higher growth potential with higher risk.
Solana vs Ethereum at a glance
| Ethereum (ETH) | Solana (SOL) | |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2015 | 2020 |
| Consensus | Proof of stake (since September 2022) | Proof of stake plus Proof of History |
| Scaling approach | Layer-2 rollups (Base, Arbitrum, Optimism and others) | One fast base layer |
| Typical fees | Low on L1 since 2024, and fractions of a cent on L2s | Fractions of a cent |
| Biggest strengths | Security, decentralization, DeFi and stablecoin leadership | Speed, low cost, consumer apps and trading |
| Main risks | Complexity of the L2 ecosystem and competition | Outage history, validator hardware demands |

What is Ethereum?
Ethereum is the original smart contract blockchain, created by Vitalik Buterin and launched in 2015. It hosts the largest ecosystem of decentralized finance (DeFi) apps, stablecoins and tokenized assets. In September 2022, “the Merge” moved Ethereum from proof of work to proof of stake, cutting its energy use by more than 99%. Upgrades since then, including Dencun (2024), Pectra (May 2025) and Fusaka (December 2025), have made layer-2 networks dramatically cheaper and improved staking and wallets. What is Solana?
Solana, founded by Anatoly Yakovenko and launched in 2020, is designed for speed. It combines proof of stake with Proof of History, a cryptographic clock that lets validators agree on the order of transactions quickly. Solana processes thousands of transactions per second with fees that are usually a tiny fraction of a cent, making it popular for trading, payments, memecoins and consumer apps.
Key differences
Speed and fees
Solana processes transactions on one fast chain, with near-instant confirmations and very low fees. Ethereumโs main chain is slower, but most everyday activity now happens on layer-2 networks, where fees are also very low.
Decentralization and security
Ethereum has a much larger and more diverse set of validators, and it has never had a full network outage. Solanaโs validators require powerful hardware, which limits how many people can run one. Solana suffered several outages in 2021โ2022 and a five-hour outage in February 2024. Its reliability has improved since, helped by new validator software such as Jump Cryptoโs Firedancer.
Ecosystem
Ethereum leads in DeFi, stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets. Solana leads in trading volume on decentralized exchanges at times, and in memecoin and consumer activity. Both have large developer communities.
Staking
You can stake both ETH and SOL to earn rewards and help secure the network, either directly or through exchanges and liquid staking tokens.
Which is a better investment?
It depends on your risk tolerance. ETH is often viewed as the “blue chip” smart contract asset. SOL has historically been more volatile, with bigger rallies and deeper drawdowns. Many investors hold both. Before you buy either, read how to research cryptocurrency.

Frequently asked questions
Is Solana faster than Ethereum?
Yes. Solanaโs base layer is much faster than Ethereumโs. Ethereum relies on layer-2 networks for speed and low fees.
Is Ethereum still proof of work?
No. Ethereum switched to proof of stake in September 2022. Ethereum Classic still uses proof of work.
Can Solana overtake Ethereum?
Solana has grown quickly, but Ethereum remains far larger by total value locked, stablecoin supply and institutional use.
Are there Solana ETFs?
Yes. Spot Solana ETFs began trading in the US in October 2025.
